BONUSES FOR BOARD MEMBERS

As the gift giving season arrives, discussion turns to presenting the Board Members with a "Holiday Bonus" or "Holiday Gift" for their service during the past year. Clearly, Board Members cannot be paid to serve on the Board and it would be unethical for the Board to vote themselves a bonus to be paid from Association funds. So, how and when, should Board Members be recognized for volunteering their time to run a non-profit corporation?

First and foremost, the Board should never take an action to utilize Association funds to reward themselves. As a Homeowner, or group of Homeowners, you may consider chipping in and buying lunch or dinner for the Board. But more importantly, why not take a few minutes to send them a note recognizing the difference they have made in your community? The countless hours they have committed to managing the Association and sacrifices they have made for the betterment of your home. Sometimes, a simple thank you is worth more than any material gift. Have you shown your Board Members how much you appreciate them?
